Elekty                  (1841 – )     RIN 389

Betsy Matilda Windsor (1850-1912) RIN 681
MRIN 210

John A. was born in Lansing, Tompkins county NY in July 1827. As late as 1850 he was living with his parents in Rice, Cattaraugus county NY.

His first wife is known only by the name, Elekty. They were married in Ischua, NY. She was only 14 or 15 when their first child was born in New York. It is imaginable that her young age made quite a stir in the community and they were "sent to the woodshed" in Wisconsin . About 1856 they moved to Marathon County WI. John’s occupation is recorded as a shingle maker in 1860. They had 3 children.

Name Birth
Eliza Abt 1855, NY
Ellen Abt 1856, WI
Alice Abt 1857, WI

The 1870 US Census of Marathon county WI shows Eliza, age 16, keeping house while Ella age 14 and Alice age 12 are listed "at school". It appears the children were left in Marathon county while John returned to New York. I can guess that Elekty died. Whether John abandoned them or left them in the care of others, we do not know. They may have been living in the household of Octave Robarch(?).

John appears in the 1865 census of Ischua NY living as a single man with his mother and brother Marcus. He married Betsy Matilda Windsor in 1867. In section 4 of the 1869 map of Humphrey township is the farm of J. A. Onan and a shingle mill on Five Mill Run [creek]. The 1874 Business Directory of Cattaraugus County shows him residing in Cadiz and operating a notions and groceries store. He died of dropsy in Franklinville on March 22, 1910 after being an invalid for several years. John and Betsy had one child; Ada (Addie).

Generation 4

Eliza married A. B. Arnold on November 17, 1872 at the house of H. M. Griffen in the town of Plover, Portage County WI.

Ellen (Ella) married William E. Sullivan on April 5, 1873 in the town of Plover, Portage County WI.

Generation 3

Betsy Matilda received a tribute in a story about her after her death. Written by M. H. Wade, it published in a local paper. She was the daughter of D. E. Windsor and lived in Franklinville practically all her life. Her daughter [Ada] married James Wenrick, living in Buffalo NY at the time of Betsy’s death. The Wenricks had three children, Harry, Lloyd and Lee. Betsy was a member of the Free Methodist church where she was a "quiet, untiring worker". "The funeral was largely attended at the little church in Cadiz only a step from the home in which she had resided continuously for nearly half a century." She loved children, especially babies and was known to take them in for days or months; some remaining for years, as a foster mother.

Generation 4

Ada (Addie) born about 1873 in Franklinville NY and died January 1907 in Marathon county WI

Sarah (Sally) Onan (1829-1866) RIN 323
Stephen Moffat                         RIN 541
MRIN 166

Sarah was born December 11, 1829 at Lansing, Tompkins county, NY. She died April 19, 1866 and is buried in the Fitch cemetery, Ischua, NY. Aside from being born in NY, nothing is know about Stephen. Censuses of 1850 and 1860 show Sarah and Stephen living with their family in Humphrey, Cattaraugus county. The 1870 census shows Stephen living alone with the children. The children were; John, Samuel, Charles, Mary and Judson.
