Samuel T. Onan Sybil Winsor Onan
[phot0369p3] [phot0369p1]
Samuel was the second child of James and Mary Onan. He was born while they were
still in Pennsylvania which establishes the last known date for residence there. As with
Warren, no birth records have been found. He grew up farming in Cattaraugus County, NY and
married Sybil there in 1840. The family moved west; to Illinois in 1848 and Wisconsin in
1862. He died at Plover WI in 1867 and is buried in the Morrel Cemetery there.
Sybil was also born in Cattaraugus County, NY; the daughter of Waterman Winsor.
The best written authority is the obituary for Sybil, copied below.

SYBIL PAGE ONAN [obituary]
"Mrs. Sybil Page Onan died last Wednesday
[2 Sep] afternoon at one o' clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Leslie. The
cause of death was paralysis, with which she had suffered since February.
The funeral services were held Friday at 11 o'clock a. m., and were conducted by Rev. H.
C. Buell, who preached using Psalms 116:15 as a text.
The remains were taken to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on the noon train, for
interment. The following acted as pall bearers here: Messrs Crawford, Garver, Kent,
Karwand, Telstad and Magnuson.
Those who attended the funeral were Mrs. Carlton, Mrs. Shannon and Mr. and
Mrs. H. H. Onan.
The grandchildren from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shannon and daughter and Mr.
David Shannon of Pipestone, Minn.; Miss Enda and Glenn Shannon of Rolette, N. D. There
were 29 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren left to mourn.
Mrs. Carlton. Mrs. Shannon, H. H. Onan and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Leslie and J.
C. Onan, who came too late for the funeral, accompanied the remains to Cedar Falls.
Sybil Page Winsor was born in Cattaraugus county, N. Y., Jan. 1, 1823. She
was married Oct. 18, 1840 to Samuel Onan of the same county where they lived until the
spring of 1548 [1848?], when they move to Millgrove, Ill., living there until 1862. At
that time they moved to Plover, Wis., where her husband died Jan 25, 1867, of paralysis.
She made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Leslie, the most of the time during the
last twenty years. Seven children were born to them, all of whom are living: Marietta
Williams of Cedar Falls, Ia.; John C, Onan of Ames Ia.; David R. Onan of Cedar Falls;
Viola A. Shannon of Rolette, N. D.; H. Hart Onan of Jasper, Minn.; Ella A Carlton of Cass
Lake, Minn.; Frances L. Leslie of Willmar, Minn.
About fifty years ago Mrs. Onan united with the Methodist Episcopal Church,
with which denomination she was connected ever since, having her membership at the time of
her death in the M. E. church of Luverne, Minn.
Hers was a true Christian life, being always interested in those things which make for
righteousness. She was a devoted wife and mother willing to make any sacrifice for her
children, cheerful in disposition, loving in heart, courageous in spirit, and her children
will rise up and caller her blessed.
She will be greatly missed, especially by those who have been intimately
associated with her during the recent years of her life, but they have the assurance that
she is safe and happy in the Home that she thought of much and to which she was drawn
nearer as the days went by. They also know that:"
"All are not taken; they are left behind
Living beloved, tender looks to bring.
And Make the daylight still a happy thing.
And tender voices to make soft the wind."

----------
The cause of her death is listed as Apoplexy with chronic Nephritis.
Sybil married a second time. This is somehow left out of the obituary above. On January
14, 1869 she married Herman M. Griffin in the town of Plover, Portage County, WI. I have
no details of their life together or when Herman died.
