Letters from Ole Hoiby at Crane Lake to his daughter Betty Onan in Minneapolis

Monday [July] 29, 1940

Dear Betty You war telling me about the Heat Well we no nothing about the terebel Heat at Crane Lak for is Heven not Hell So we ar ok. Well [????] all Joker a sid I am very glad to hear from you as oftin as you can sit and theat every thing is all ok in minneapolis I was sorey I mist frank Clark how long is Henry going to stay if he arnt come up hear if I get to feeling good I may come down some day later. Now as far as my self I am getting along O.K. Say tell Bud to let the Storm window Shutter hingis goe untill I come down and maybe I can make some. Sunday we head a good Rain and a Real little Storm tell Jim I Blew hell out off the well but thear ar more to Blow.*

I supose Henry is glad the House is complet.

*Several attempts were made to pound a shallow well. One was finally snaked down between the rocks into the sand near the dock, and a hand pump put in place. To "improve" the well, Jim and Ole tried blasting with dynamite. It eventually closed the well all together. DWOII

 

September 14 1940

Dear Betty I suppose you have been looking for a letter for some time. I came back a crose the Lake fine But it was much worse Tuesday so I did not go over

Well Betty I am getting a long fine. I have not felt eney time so you nead not wore about me.

I am invited to Casoreto for diner Sunday and Monday. Monday the hambergs [Handbergs] ar goin to be thear.

I have quiet a pile of Wood Sawed and split I am doing my work now so when it comes to going home I wont hav so much to do. I am sending you this telegram So you can see wher truble is. I think this is about al you will be able to Read.

Dear Betty

I am droping you a line that I received a letter from the attorney about coming Home I told him I would be down Friday if the Lake was not to Storme for it is very ruf Just now.

I have all the Curtins down gettin Ready as fast as I can and I am going to try an have it Ready for spring.

July 19 1941

I recived Your letter Some tim ago the Say theat it is Better to give than to recive Well the way it looks I rather Receive.

This eyer a very fine day the Lake is like amerer but Really Cool

I have been Sawing a little wood. I cut down some dead Birche trees other wis I have not done very much. Well I suppose it wont be long now be for you folks will be coming up. That Play Pen theat Bud Maid up hear is in good shap So when you come you can bring the dog they both can play in it. The other day Mr Clark came a long and wanted much to go fishing so we went up to Swansons Bay but I never had a bite and what do you think of that. Well I am glad theat Bud could ware something of mine I heave Some new tyes [????????].

Dear Betty I thought I would kinda let you know what I Heave on hand. ½ Bush of Potatoes lots of Milk lot of Can goods all what you Saw down Seller home lots Jam

thea ar going to have a Water Carnival at Orr July 27 on Sunday and if you should hapen to Come next Sunday you stop at Orr for I am going up with Casareto have diner with them. You can let me know by Saturday Mail and I will come home with You. There will be a big Bunch of Indians from the Reservation.

I was out fishing with Clarks. He stop for me and we went to Swensons Bay up at Sand Point Lake but I did not get even a nibble but when you come well try North West Bay. Will give Bud and the Kids My Regards. Love

July 24, 1941

the time goes fast

It wornt be long befor I will be home. Well I suppose your Mooveing by this time and I know that is a heard Job So much more than a Person would think tell Bud theat the Reado Battery was left in the Boat under the Seat but I did not think He would Kneed it but I will Bring it home when I come home.

Well we heav bin heaving Some Rain It started Saterday Noon Just letting up now Monday noon.

Well the Stuf you Left did not Spoil It all went down my stumick but I heave Some Bakin Left when Dr Casarato Came out I got about a dosen Ears of corn and tomatos which we fix. I heave been feeling fin now for some time the fish ar Just beginning to Bit a Little.

Well give My Regards to Bud and the Kids. Tel those Pepel that going to be in the Hous Not to Let Sarah in.

July Wenesday 30 1941

Dear Betty

I Put the wicks in the Stove today thear 6 wicks to set and the sent 3 screans to goe in theat you lift to light the burner

how did you order just th wick the New wicks ar Glas Spun and will last treree time as long as the old ones and if you can tell me how much this cost and I will send you the money

Now about the wedding Present for well I cant think of his name now for Ems Boy. I will InClose a dollar as it was menchind

Well I did not goe to Orr Last Sunday It was to D hat thet hear in stead all day with a little Bruse

When you come you can bring 2 or 3 Shirts up I am kinday short

We had a good hard Rain the other night. It raised the lake 2 in the Lake is Still to top of Bottom step. Well til David theat he can dig as big a hole as he wants to

Mr Clark stoped for me Last week and wanted me to go fishing went to Swnsons Bay in the upper Sand Point and did not heave a Single Bite but we Came home happy Just the Same. I heav not ben doing very much I just bin cutting a little wood and not Very much is Seems to me that I want to Sit a Round to much I dont Seeme to have eny pep.

Tell Bud I tamed the Squirls so tame theat Com and Sit on the table out sid and mak theat of Rattling Noise so I heat Shoot A cuple of them but ther Chipmunks to glore

Well I suppose Your get along with the hous by this time. You better give the Paint plenty tim to dry

Crane Lake August 5 1942

Dear Betty

I am Just going to drop you a lin so you will know theat every thins is ok with me

Well we heave head Som bead weather Cold down to 48 Sunday and Monday. Now to day it heav Rained Last night and all day to day and still raining now 9. P.M.

Well I heave bin Sawing wood and splitting well I am Cooking theree times a day and getting a ling alreight as you may collect.

Last Sunday I was Invited over to Cassareto for diner but when I did not com they Came over after me so I head to go and She head a Real nice Diner and 2 or 3 games of cards and I came home about 5 P.M. and head supper home.

Well I heave not bin fishing yet but I got some Minnos the other day so I am going to try my Luck soon.

Well I heave not got eney one to come over and Clean hous yet Ther is no one to get up hear on the Lake. Mrs. Hamberg heas not bin abel to get a cook the Yea So She is not Cooking many meales this year

Mrs Oslund is shat of help so I think before long I try it my Self for I am begening to get my Second Wind of cors I heave quit a Lott on my first So you can amegin the second

Well tel Bud the Engin and Pump is working fine All I hafte doe is givit Oil and gas

I head a letter from Henry at thomas av North

Tell Henry Hoiby from Washington If I was in good condition I would come down but we ar heaving bum weather for this time of year

Dear Betty I am Just going to drop you a line Just to Let you Know theat every thing is going fine up hear I just head a Letter from Lill and thea ar Just Cutting th grain and every thing is ok up thear and Card from Joe

I heave Cut most all the wood theat I am going to Cut this Yea for next Sumer

We are Just beginning to have Some nise weathr it hear bin verl coald this Sumer so wee ar due for some good weather

When you Send the Candy you can take the Money out of the 15.00 So theat will be fin You sa Henry and Julia heave not bin out thea W henry dos not get Home untill 7/30 bu he works in the Shop

When he has some small Jobs So he ment heave bin busy. Remember Me to the Rest of the fameley
